The measurables and arm strength to be a starting quarterback in the NFL are there. Tyler Bray threw for a total of 7,444 yards and 69 touchdowns against SEC defenses. He has the “raw” skill and talent, but Bray’s a gamble.
“Bray needs a lot of work and he has to grow up and he has to make better decisions on and off the field,” said one Chiefs fan. “Those are three really big deals. He’s a major project. I like the signing and hold out a degree of hope, but anything more is a tad too optimistic for me right now.”
Lack of maturity is a big concern; you need that to lead… if you want others to follow. Lack of maturity kept Bray from getting drafted, but some didn’t expect that.
NFLDraftScout.com ranked Bray as the seventh best available player at his position, to be picked in the third round.
Eleven quarterbacks were selected in the 2013 NFL Draft, Bray wasn’t one of them.
“Scouts praise Bray’s stature, arm and his gunslinger mentality, although the latter, coupled with questions about his maturity, will also give other NFL personnel people plenty to ponder,” said Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports.
Bray left Tennessee prior to his senior season, gave up the schooling thinking he’d be drafted. Didn’t happen, but if there was a “best” situation for an undrafted free-agent quarterback with lots of “potential” like Bray to be in signing with Andy Reid and the Chiefs is one.
It’s clear, at least I think so, that Alex Smith is who John Dorsey and Reid hope will be their guy for the next four years.
The Chiefs properly evaluated the college scene, saw no viable options and took Smith with their second-round pick. To me, Smith’s worth a second in this year’s draft, he was better than what was available.
If the Chiefs wanted to restore order, win and get fans back into Arrowhead Smith was the route to go.
Geno Smith wasn’t just passed up by the Chiefs, but every team that “experts” thought needed a quarterback. The Buffalo Bills valued EJ Manuel in the first round over Geno.
Time will tell if the Bills were “that smart”, but Geno wasn’t anyone’s choice with their first.
When it comes to leadership, smarts and humility Smith has the Chiefs starting QB gig locked down. When it comes to long-term potential that’s Bray, sorry Chase Daniel fans.
We’re at the point of the offseason where fans are just waiting on the pads and practice to start. What happens between the draft and preseason is speculation. Headlines are created to fill space.
When the action starts we’ll see if anything’s changed for Bray or if it’s gonna show up. We’ll see.
Good day, Chiefs fans!
